Guidance for the iPhone officially under development

I’m letting you know that the iPhone version of Guidance is now officially under development. Alhamdulillah progress is going well and I fully expect it to be in the App store in a few weeks. Here’s a very early screenshot which may or may not be subject to change. So far the included features include calculating the prayer times for your current location (either by entering your location manually or having the iPhone automatically detect your location) and displaying a map of your current location with an arrow overlaid showing you the direction of the Qibla. Of course this is only the initial release and inshallah plan to make development on Guidance (for both Mac OS X and the iPhone) a top priority.

  2. Issam Elbaytam Says:

    As salamu alaikum.

Please add a feature to add minute fine adjustments to each prayer time, like the many popular azan clocks.

    Jazak allah khair.

  3. ameir Says:

Definitely, this feature is being implemented on both Guidance for Mac OS X and Guidance for the iPhone.

  4. Umar Says:

    Brother,
May Allah reward you immensely for this truly wonderful service you are providing.
My only regret is that I hadn’t discovered your website sooner.

Not only are the programs very useful, but they are also excellently designed… which is something I’m proud to see as a graphic designer myself.

I’m definitely looking forward to the release of the iPhone application.

    JazakAllah.

Jazakallahu khairun for your comment, i love hearing from people who enjoy using my software.

  6. Shaharyar Says:

Looks like its coming along, but just using a standard tableView and navigationView for the prayer times is a little, missing out
look at iPray when it was released for the jailbreaked iPhones,
you could try implementing a custom tableView to have nice gui
    just my two cents

  7. ameir Says:

Yeah it will definitely have a custom interface, its still being fine tuned at the moment but as soon as its finalized I will be posting a screenshot inshallah.

  8. Shaharyar Says:

That’s great mash’Allah, just out of curiosity , what method are you using to calculate the prayer times, is it grabbing prayer times from an online database, or is it calculated via an algorithm in the code itself?
and btw I really enjoy using your guidance app, its perfect (well atleast for me).

  9. ameir Says:

Shaharyar, Guidance calculates prayer times using an algorithm and does not rely on any database or internet connection, this is for both Guidance for Mac OS X and on the iPhone.

  10. Shaharyar Says:

    mash’Allah, thats good
I had a question, as im fairly new to mac development, do you recommend learning C before heading into obj-c, and any tips to get started, thankyou for taking the time to read and respond to my comments. I admire a developer who is dedicated. Alhumdulilah, your applications are great.

  11. ameir Says:

If you’ve never done C I would definitely recommend knowing it before doing Objective-C, I would also recommend finding a book or some tutorials on using Xcode and Interface Builder as they are essential for Mac development. If you have any more questions about Objective-C and development feel free to email me through the contact form at http://guidanceapp.com/contact/

  12. Nabeel Farooqui Says:

ameir, you truly have won me over by your hard work and knowledge. Will the app have adhan alerts for the prayers?

  13. ameir Says:

Nabeel, due to the short amount of time before Ramadan the first version might not, however I will be sure to quickly update it to include that functionality. Even though the iPhone doesn’t let a program run in the background, if you keep the program running when you lock the phone it can still give you audio alerts. So inshallah I will be using this to let Guidance on the iPhone play the adhan to remind you.
